Description |
Abstract |
This data set provides maps of land cover type for 1990 and 1995 for the intensive Landuse zone of Australia. The mapping is based on the Australian Land cover Change data set. Vegetation properties provided include the land cover type categorised as pasture/crop, urban, bare, water, orchard, plantation or native or exotic woody vegetation. Woody vegetation is defined as vegetation communities with at least 20% canopy cover more than 2m high. For the woody vegetation, estimates of the over-story canopy cover percentage and over-story tree height are provided. |

Lineage |
Source data for this data set are from the Australian Land Cover Change (ALCC) project. The ALCC data set specifications are described in: Kitchen, M. and Barson, M., 1998. Monitoring land cover change. Specifications for the remote sensing of agricultural land cover change project 1990-1995, Bureau of Rural Sciences, Canberra.
The project results are described in: Barson, M., Randall, L. and Bordas, V., 2000. Land cover change in Australia. Results of the collaborative Bureau of Rural Sciences - state agencies' project on remote sensing of agricultural land cover change, Bureau of Rural Sciences, Canberra.
|
Positional Accuracy |
The predictive surface is a 0.01 X 0.01 degree grid (geographic coordinate system) or 1 X 1 km (Map Grid of Australia projections). The positional accuracy is about 500m. |
Attribute Accuracy |
Land cover was checked by each State, using ancillary and field data in the development of the original data set.
|
Logical Consistency |
The data is logically consistent in that each value in the map relates to a single value in the property database. |
Completeness |
The data cover the intensive use zone of Australia. The woody vegetation is missing the cover and height attributes in Queensland and in Victoria outside the Murray-Darling Basin. Landuse is only attributed as woody and non-woody in Victoria outside the Murray-Darling Basin. |

A more detailed user guide is part of this data set. Kitchin and Barson (1998) (User guide is no longer available. The Bureau of Meteorology now handles this). It describes the technical specifications of the original Australian Land cover Change data set.
Barson et al (2000) (User guide is no longer available. The Bureau of Meteorology now handles this) It describes the results of the original Australian Land cover Change data set.
