IQQM Software Development

Geoff Podger from NSW Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR) originally developed the IQQM software. Many other programmers have contributed to IQQM development, too many to list here. These programmers are recognised within the software source code. Current DIPNR developers include Geoff Podger, Abi Javam, Andrew Davidson, Hemantha Perera and Les Sullivan

Development History

IQQM v.1 was developed in 1993. It was based on the daily time step hydrologic model WARAS, developed for the Lachlan Valley by Ken Macoun of Lyall and Macoun. This model was modified so that it could be applied to any river valley.

IQQM V.2 was completed by mid 1993. It used the Interacter library to provide a menu based interface to the DOS program.

IQQM V.3 was completed by end of 1993. It used the Interacter library to provide a time series graphing facility.

IQQM V.4 was completed by end of 1994. Water quality modelling capability was added based upon the Qual2E software (ref). Constituents included are conservative (salinity), non conservative with exponential decay, temperature, dissolved oxygen, BOD, phosphorus, nitrogen and algae.

IQQM V.5 was completed by end of 1998. Code was completely re-written to the FORTRAN 90 standard.

IQQM V.6 commenced in 1999 and the last version was completed in 2003. This version was introduced when a new version control system was organised for IQQM. There has been a substantial amount of development of this version up until the end of 2003 when this version was replaced by the Windows based version.

IQQM V.7 commenced 2002. This is the current version of IQQM. It has been completely re-written in FORTRAN 97 and includes modular design and dynamic array allocation. It includes a graphical user interface that operates in the Windows environment. There has been substantial development and testing of conservative water quality constituents. This version was developed currently with v.6 of IQQM for some time. Over 2003 a large amount of effort was made to ensure that the latest v.6 of IQQM and this version produced similar results.

Future Developments

IQQM is under constant development, tailored to address the emerging needs of water resource managers. This is largely driven within DIPNR but also based upon feedback from IQQM users. Future plans include:

  • Ensuring consistency between system file parameters, parameter dialogues and documentation;
  • improvements to resource assessment configuration and dialogues;
  • Upgrading the current Technical Reference Manual to include all the new features added to IQQM:
  • Improvements to IQQM context sensitive help;
  • Sediment transport;
  • Testing of crop model 3;
  • Surface and groundwater interaction model;
  • Linkage with hydraulic model;
  • Linkage with DYRESM reservoir model; and
  • Inclusion of NLFIT optimiser for rainfall run-off model calibration.
