Features and Limitations

Input Data

Input data is related specifically to the component models selected in setting up a Source Catchments scenario. Typically, input data consists of climate, topography, land use and management practices.

More information about file formats for Source Catchments can be found in the Toolkit Data Files guide.

Output Data

The predictions produced by Source Catchments depend on the component models selected for that project.

Example outputs include flow and constituent loads as time series for particular sub-catchments, nodes or links, or catchment maps of load.

There are a broad range of choices, and sub-sets of outputs, such as for a single sub-catchment, can be selected if required.

Caution Notes For User

Source Catchments V2.0 release

Users need to be aware that outputs generated by Source Catchments are NOT automatically saved when the overall project is saved. Users need to save each output manually to their computer. This means that every time a project is opened the outputs need to be generated again by running each scenario in Source Catchments.

Limitations

Source Catchments embodies a new approach to catchment modelling that encourages not only a new way of thinking about constructing models, but also a new way of thinking about catchment management problems and solutions. As with all models, however, there are limitations to the Source Catchments approach. These limitations are as follows:

  • Source Catchments adopts a particular conceptual structure upon integrated catchment models. This structure may not be the most appropriate for all types of problems;
  • The predictive power of Source Catchments depends upon the available component models, and the appropriate use of those models in the problem domain, supported by data;
  • Developing new component models is a complex process requiring specialist knowledge; not all Source Catchments users will be able to develop new component models; and
  • Source Catchments is not suitable for detailed hydraulic or ecological modelling.
