| Description |
Abstract |
This dataset is primarily a collection of cross-sectional stream survey data for 114 reaches in Victoria, Australia. The stream survey data was obtained from flood-study surveys, geomorphic assessments and physical habitat studies carried out by government agencies, private consultants and researchers. The cross-section data is available in the form of HEC-RAS ?geometry files?. These files can be used in HEC-RAS or in the River Analysis Package (RAP), a CRCCH Toolkit product for analysing physical habitat ? ecology interactions. The bankfull level has been identified for each cross-section using a method described in Harman, Stewardson and DeRose (in prep) and is provided in the ?geometry files?. The location of each reach is specified in an ARC-GIS coverage by the upstream and downstream extent of each survey.
Flow profiles up to the bankfull discharge are also provided for each reach. These were generated using a one-dimensional hydraulic model similar to HEC RAS. Flow profiles are provided in a form identical to HECRAS flow profile summary tables and can be read directly into RAP or EXCEL. RAP can be used to calculate hydraulic metrics using the channel surveys and water surface profiles.
Uncertainty in the hydraulic model parameters (roughness and the downstream slope) creates uncertainty in the flow profiles. This uncertainty has been investigated for this dataset, and the 90th and 10th percentiles of the output error distribution are also available as flow profiles. This permits users to gauge the amount of error in their own modelling outputs attributable to error in modelled profiles.

| Stored Data Format |
Digital Meta Data table in MS Excel.
DIGITAL Geometry data is stored in HEC-RAS v3.11 geometry files (*.gxx).
DIGITAL Flow profile data is in comma separated values files, in the format created by copying a flow profile summary table from HEC-RAS. This is the appropriate format for inputting the file into RAP.
DIGITAL ESRI ARC Info shape-file of the approximate upstream and downstream extents of the surveys.

| Data Quality |
Lineage |
The original set of stream surveys collected included 117 surveys. These surveys were supplied from Earth Tech, The Department of Sustainability and Environment Floodplains Unit, Sinclair Knight Mertz, the Environmental Protection Agency and internal databases of researchers involved in the project (i.e Michael Stewardson and Tony Ladson). Of these, 19 are floodplain surveys that are yet to be digitized, and not of insufficient quality to warrant the effort. Another 9 reaches were very long, and were consequently split into between 2 and 4 sections less than 10 km long. Thus the total number of useable reaches in the database is 114.
The cross-section data for each reach was entered into a standardised format in a MS EXCEL file, which was subsequently read into MATLAB. The MATLAB data was exported into HEC-RAS geometry files using a custom-built export routine. The modelled flow profile data was also exported into .csv format using a custom export routine in MATLAB.

| Positional Accuracy |
The positional accuracy of the survey data is not known. The position of the upstream and downstream boundaries of the reaches was estimated using location information, maps, aerial photographs and plan-forms of the surveys supplied by the original data holder. The position was estimated on the VICMAP Hydro 1:25000 series digital map of rivers in Victoria. Positional accuracy is within 500m, but may be within 100m in some cases. |
| Attribute Accuracy |
The data in this database is believed to be of good quality. Every attempt has been made to ensure the data is a true representation of the data supplied by the original holders. No guarantee can be given on the quality of the original surveys, except that all the data was collected by agencies experienced in river surveying.
Particular note should be made of the fact that the surveys were carried out for a variety of purposes. The level of detail surveyed in-channel, on the floodplain and longitudinally reflects this variety.
|
| Logical Consistency |
Checks were made to ensure that the upstream and downstream ends of the reaches were properly attributed as such. Obviously erroneous data points in cross-sections were removed. |
